What are the application requirements?
You can find the application requirements for each of the following:
General Admissions Questions
I am interested in applying, where do I start my application?
To be considered for admission to any of our programs, we require an application to be filled out and required documents to be uploaded online. You can start or continue your application here.
Can I submit a paper application?
All application materials must be submitted electronically, primarily through the application portal. If you have any questions about this, please contact schargr@gmu.edu.
Can I apply to more than one program?
Yes, although we strongly encourage applicants to think carefully about our programs and apply to the one that suits their academic and future career goals the best. We encourage applicants to study what each program entails and what the core curriculum of the program is focused on to make this decision. Prospective applicants are welcome to contact the Graduate Admissions team to talk through the programs to help with this decision as well.
A separate application fee will need to be paid for each application submitted.
Do I have to submit an application if I want to take a class, but am not interested in pursuing a degree?
Yes, the Schar School of Policy and Government requires that all students wishing to take classes apply to the Schar School. If you are not interested in seeking a degree through the Schar School, you can apply to take classes through our school as a nondegree seeking student.
What's the difference between an “international student” and having “international credentials”?
We consider students to be “international students” if they require a student visa (F1) from the University.
Students with “international credentials” are those that have completed a degree outside of the U.S. These students may require a student visa from the university, but this encompasses anyone who has completed any degree from an institution located outside of the United States, regardless of citizenship or visa status.
Any student with international credentials is required to submit additional materials with their application. Please review the list of additional materials required.
